Ornamental fish, such as Koi and Goldfish, are delicate, especially during the winter months. The main cause of fish die off is a decrease of oxygen in the waterbody. Within a waterbody, the bottom water is slightly warmer and denser.
By adding an aeration system this allows the warm water to circulate throughout the water column, melting the ice on the surface. Open areas of water increase oxygen levels, preventing a winter fish kill. The hole size and effectiveness depends on several factors including, air temperature, depth of water, number of diffusers, and the amount of airflow.
Fish usually seek refuge in the warmer parts of the water; closer to the bottom. It is important to locate the aeration system diffusers in an area where water depth is not at its deepest, less than 4 feet depth. If a diffuser is placed deeper, there is more cold water circulating than warm water, causing a "super-cooling" effect which can lead to fish kills.
